Penn State to head hydrogen research consortium
Funded by a $2.4 million research grant from the US Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy Research Initiative, the consortium, which also includes Argonne National Laboratory, the University of South Carolina and Tulane University, will work to establish the most efficient technologies for hydrogen production that are compatible with nuclear-generated heat sources.
Researchers, under the direction of Penn State professor of energy and mineral engineering Serguei Lvov, will examine certain thermochemical cycles and key reactions through experimental work and process simulation to assess their viability for future sustainable energy infrastructure.
Explaining the reasons for the investigations, Mr Lvov said: "Energy dependence and the large increase in CO2 and other greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in the atmosphere are serious concerns today.
"Substituting hydrogen for fossil fuels and the use of electric power/hear from nuclear reactors rather than fossil fuels would increase energy independence and educe GHG emissions."
