Biofuels and their use in fuel cells

Author
Sylvia Baron, Imperial College
This article is a brief outline of fuel cells running on biofuels, i.e. fuels derived from biomass and used in conventional fuel cells. These should not be confused with biofuel cells or biochemical fuel cells, which use biocatalysts for the conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy.

Text

First, this article will try to answer the obvious question: What interest is there in running fuel cells on biofuels? And what is the rationale behind such an idea? Then this article looks at what type of biofuels might be suitable for integration with fuel cells and, from another angle, what type of fuel cell would be best suited to such an application. Thereafter, the problems associated with the use of biofuels in a fuel cell are presented and examples are given of demonstration projects of such systems running around the world.
