New UK project to develop alkaline fuel cells

Alkaline fuel cells are not a new technology. They powered the first fuel cell vehicle, an Allis-Chalmers tractor in 1959 and have also been used in NASA’s Space Shuttle Programme. After the late 1990s, though, the amount of research and commercial development in this area dropped markedly.

There are companies still working in the area but to many commentators, it does not seem the most dynamic type of fuel cell. However, there are some people still working out how to improve the technology.
