US Government and Major Automakers to Launch Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Programme

On 7 January 2002 Spencer Abraham, the US Energy Secretary, revealed that the US Government would shortly launch a programme to promote the development of hydrogen as an alternative fuel in cars and trucks.

Text

The programme - which is expected to be called "Freedom car" - should give a major boost to the development of fuel cells and a hydrogen economy. Participants will include General Motors, Ford and the Chrysler arm of DaimlerChrysler.

In particular the "Freedom Car" project will fund research into the handling of hydrogen and the creation of an infrastructure for dispensing hydrogen.

This will greatly improve the prospects of fuel cell vehicles, as the absence of an hydrogen infrastructure is currently a major hurdle in the way of their adoption. "The more certain we are about the infrastructure, the more aggressive we can be about the cars", comments Byron McCormick, director of fuel cell activities at General Motors. "The Government is a huge force in what we're talking about", he adds.
